The Patagonia Capilene Cool Sun Hoody Review

With the Capilene Cool Sun Hoody, Patagonia makes its long-awaited return to the sun hoody game. Made from 100% recycled polyester jersey and featuring a 40+ UPF rating, it easily handled intense sun exposure, back-to-back trail days, and hot European heatwaves all while keeping me cool and comfortable.

Fabric Performance & Construction

The Patagonia Capilene Cool Sun Hoody uses 100% recycled Capilene Cool jersey knit. Because jersey consists of interlocking yarn loops rather than a standard perpendicular weave, it provides natural stretch and flexibility without requiring elastane.

This design is intended to enhance airflow and moisture management by keeping the fabric slightly elevated off the skin. While I cannot verify if it physically hovers off the skin, testing it during Europe’s multiple heat waves this summer proved that it is easily among the most breathable sun hoodies I have used.

Sizing & Fit Overview

As expected with Patagonia Sun tops, size XL offers a comfortable, relaxed fit without feeling overly roomy, whereas sizing down to Large would likely be too snug. The hem extends just below the waistband, avoiding the trend toward cropped cuts.

The XL sleeves are slightly loose but fall at an ideal length, remaining comfortable whether using the thumb holes or resting at the wrist. Pushing the sleeves up works well too, as they retain their shape without stretching out.

The hood performs exceptionally well. Leaving it buttoned prevents it from flapping in the wind, and my head stayed cool even with the hood drawn tight. Unbuttoning allows extra ventilation, but the small button is difficult to unfasten while wearing the shirt and even more awkward to re-button. A slightly larger button would simplify one-handed adjustments without being obtrusive.

A Note on Women’s Sizing

My wife, not a reviewer nor a guide, bought a Capilene Cool Sun Hoody on my recommendation. At 157cm tall, she found the medium sleeves to be a bit long though not overly so. However, a female guest who is 6’ tall tried on the women’s large and found them a little short.

The Chest Pocket

Chest pockets are featured on both the men’s and women’s Capilene Cool Sun Hoodies, positioned on the left side of the chest for men and along the side of the bust for women. Frankly, their practical use remains a bit unclear. While hiking in Europe with lift access, storing a lift pass inside works well enough, but carrying anything heavier causes the pocket to shift uncomfortably.

My wife wore the women’s model throughout most of the summer without using the pocket even once. While shifting the placement away from the front of the bust is logical, positioning it along the side where it gets squeezed by the arm proved less than ideal in practice.

Ultimately, both of us would welcome a pocket-free version of the Capilene Cool Hoody.

The Patagonia Capilene Cool on the Trail

The original Patagonia Tropic Comfort hoody was legendary. I bought two and wore them until they changed color. Patagonia recalled the shirts in 2021 because the UPF protection was not what it was originally advertised to be. That didn’t stop me. I kept rocking them, no sun burn, so I was happy. Eventually, holes in the shirts meant I could no longer wear them , at least in front of guests. I’ve spent the last four years hunting for their replacement and Patagonia has finally provided relief.

I was excited to try out The Capilene Cool Sun Hoody off the strength of the Tropic Comfort Hoody. It is a fantastic piece of protective clothing. So fantastic that I bought two more colorways!

This was my main sun hoody for the summer of 2026. It is loose enough that it was cool but not so loose that I felt like I was wearing my dads clothing. Thumb loops held the sleeves long and covered the back of my hand though I often didn’t use the thumb loop as I didn’t want the shirt material between my hands and hiking poles. Not once did I get a sunburn, stayed cool, all shirts look nearly as good as new.

So, was it worth the wait from the Tropic Comfort Hoody? You bet it was!
