SKI LODGE BASED TOURING TRIPS
We’re now taking bookings for our Winter 2021 trip into the amazing Callaghan area. This year we’re offering a 5-day and a 7-day trip in February and early March for the best snow. Using the remote Journeyman Lodge as a home-base this fully guided and catered ski touring package has it all: amazing skiing, great food and luxurious accommodation! We’re even bringing a professional photographer to capture the adventure. If you’re looking for an amazing lodge-based ski touring trip this winter you’ve found it!
A quick helicopter flight from the Squamish Airport will deposit you at the picturesque Jim Haberl Hut in the heart of the Tantalus Range. Situated in the Serratus-Dione Col at an elevation of 2,030 metres it’s the perfect base camp for exploring the amazing ski touring and mountaineering objectives in the area. These include Mt. Dione, Serratus and Alpha, all of which are visible from the Tantalus lookout on the Sea-to-Sky highway. Even better, after we ski for a few days out of the Haberl Hut tagging some local peaks with the Howe Sound at our feet we can end the trip at the Tantalus Hut and have the heli bump us back up to collect our gear!
SKI LODGE: Kokanee Glacier Lodge
The Kokanee Glacier Cabin (a lodge really!) is located on the shores of Kaslo lake in Kokanee Glacier Provincial Park, an amazing ski touring / splitboarding paradise. Sitting mostly above 1,800 metres in elevation, the park has three glaciers – Kokanee, Caribou, and Woodbury – which feed over 30 lakes. As you can expect, this also makes the cabin home to endless skiing terrain with something for almost every level of skier. This trip is being offered as an exclusive booking for the ACC Vancouver section and so bookings are to be made through the Section. Request more info
SKI LODGE: Purcell Mountain Lodge
Nestled on the west slopes of the Purcell Mountains, on the edge of Glacier National Park, Purcell Mountain Lodge is surrounded by some of the best ski touring terrain and snow anywhere! On sunny days large alpine tours can be undertaken amongst the peaks surrounding the lodge and down big alpine bowls. When it’s storming and the pow is fresh, there’s tons of naturally gladed tree runs to tackle. This is a private group booking, if you have a group of 4-8 and are interested we can send over an info package: Request more info
Every winter BlackSheep Adventure Sports offers a variety of guided, and typically catered, trips into backcountry lodges all over BC. Some are offered every year while others are unique trips into new areas or lodges that we want to explore. Here’s a listing of what we currently have on the books as well as some of the lodges we’ve visited in the past few seasons.
SKI TRAVERSES & SKI MOUNTAINEERING TRIPS
This 3-day high alpine ski route follows a series of ridges and glaciers across the divide between the Ashlu and Elaho rivers. Hard to reach and seldom attempted, this traverse is ideal for really getting away from the crowds, enjoying the quiet stillness of the backcountry all while putting your unique signature in some pristine snow.
This 3-day offering combines two popular trips into one amazing adventure: The Garibaldi Neve Traverse & Summiting the iconic Mt. Garibaldi.
An ultra-classic coastal ski tour, the Spearhead Traverse links up the Spearhead range behind Blackcomb Mountain with the Fitzsimmons Range of Whistler in a spectacular horseshoe shaped high-elevation traverse. The route has it all: 12 glaciers, 11 high alpine passes, 34 kms and some of the most spectacular mountain views around.
A lesser known but still ultra-classic coastal ski tour, the Tantalus Ski Traverse is a must do. It follows the beautiful Tantalus Range, just west of Squamish, through a high alpine link-up of glaciers and ridges before a long final decent down into the valley. Even better, because the access is difficult there’s seldom anyone to be found in the entire zone!
The mighty Mt. Columbia is the 2nd highest peak in the Canadian Rockies, the highest point in Alberta and #6 on the highest points in BC. While not a very technically difficult peak, Mt. Columbia is situated in the midst of the vast Columbia Icefield. An area notorious for bad weather and poor visibility. However, it’s also breathtakingly beautiful and a feather in any mountaineers cap!
SKI TOURING TRIPS
Looking for a private guide for a day or so of skiing along the Sea to Sky? We’re here to help! Squamish & Whistler have a ton of easily accessible ski touring that doesn’t require a huge approach. The Sea-to-Sky Gondola in Squamish gets you up into the snow and skiing with views of the ocean in no time. Alternatively, the ski lift accessed playground in Garibaldi Park behind Whistler-Blackcomb offers some simply amazing terrain and powder.
No more long approaches or multi-day traverses to get into some of the most amazing and remote areas of the Coast Mountains. Just hitch a ride in heli to kickstart a full day of ski touring and slaying epic, untouched powder with the ocean at your feet all while escaping the crowds, line-ups and the rush of the front-country.
The famous Powder Highway winds its way through the snow belts of the Monashee, Purcell and Selkirk mountains of western Canada. You’ve probably seen images of this area all over videos and magazines and dreamt of one day seeing and skiing some of these amazing areas yourself. Well, dream no longer, because it’s right here waiting for you! Designed for intermediate to advanced backcountry ski tourers and split borders, we will spend 10 days experiencing some of the best skiing Canada has to offer.
For Ski Japan 2021 we’re headed into the Japanese Alps around the lesser known area of Tenjin for a week then over to Hokkaido for some more amazing powder and natural hot springs. Sign up for either week depending on your preference – a bit steeper or a bit deeper. Or better yet, join us for both!
Perched on the ocean and surrounded by amazing volcanos this remote corner of Russia is slowly becoming a ski destination. And rightly so, think Hakkuba’s terrain combined Hokkaido’s snow! Even better, there’s basically no one around. So if you’ve been looking for a unique ski adventure this just might be the ticket.
We’re currently putting together an Indian ski touring trip based out of the Gulmarg area. If you’re looking for the next big backcountry skiing destination that’s oozing with culture, adventure, altitude and just happens to get a heap of snow then Galmarg should be top of your list. A small ski town, Gulmarg is situated in the Pir Panjal range of Northern India, one of 6 mountain ranges that make up the Himalayas. The Pir Panjal are also the first mountain range to be hit by the storms that sweep across the Indus Plains so you know the area receives a ton of snow! 15m on average per year in fact. Skiing Magazine has called Gulmarg one of the top 10 snowiest resorts in the world!
If any of these trips are of interest or have you thinking about something else that’s cool and unique let us know and we can get your adventure planned!
